How to Connect Outdoor LED Christmas Lights

LED motifs made from 2021 onwards connect together, so several products run from one socket. You join them with a T-connector and a connecting cable. Keep the total under 130 watts for motifs, or 2000 LEDs for string, net and icicle lights.

How the connection system works

Each product has a detachable power cord. Unplug it, and the product has a male and a female connector instead.

You need two parts to join them:

• A T-connector. Splits one line into two, so a second product can branch off.
• A connecting cable. Bridges the distance between the two products. Comes in 1,5, 3, 5 and 10 metres.

As a rule of thumb, order one of each per product you want to add. Both are in our accessories range.

What you can connect

• LED motifs: up to 130 watts in total on one system.
• String lights, net lights and icicle lights: up to 2000 LEDs in total.

Add up the max watt of each motif you want to join. The figure is in the technical details on every product page. A motif at 11 W and one at 48 W leave room for several more.

How to plan it before you buy

1. Decide where the power comes from. One outdoor socket is usually enough. Start there and work outwards.
2. Measure the distances between the places you want lit. That tells you which cable lengths to order.
3. Add up the watts and check you are under 130.
4. Count the T-connectors. One per product you branch off to.
5. Order one longer power cord if the standard 3 metres does not reach the socket. We stock 5 and 10 metre cords.

What cannot be connected

Motifs made in 2020 or earlier do not have the connector. They work perfectly well, but each needs its own socket.

Products from other brands cannot be joined to ours. The connectors differ, and mixing systems is where things get wet inside.

Keeping the connections dry

Each joint has a rubber sleeve that slides over it once the two halves are pushed together. Make sure the connection is fully seated and the sleeve covers the whole joint. This is the single most common reason an outdoor display fails in December.

How do I know if a product is connectable?

It is stated in the technical details on the product page. Most LED motifs, string lights, net lights and icicle lights from 2021 onwards are.

What happens if I go over 130 watts?

The system is rated for that load. Exceeding it risks overheating the connectors. Split the display across two sockets instead.

Can I mix motifs and string lights on the same line?

Yes, as long as you stay within both limits: 130 watts total and 2000 LEDs total.

Do I need one T-connector per product?

One per branch. A straight chain of two products needs only a connecting cable. A third product branching off needs a T-connector.

Can the connections stay outside all season?

Yes. They are rated IP44 when properly seated and sleeved. Take the whole display down after the season and store it dry.
